Martin studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Anthony Roden and combines a busy teaching, conducting and performing career. Martin has taught singing at Sibford School, Banbury for the past ten years, but is now concentrating on teaching privately from home.
Martin has been Musical Director with the Warriner Choral Society, since 2004. During that time he has conducted the choir through more than 30 concerts and well over 200 pieces of music, including Faure’s Requiem, Haydn`s Little Organ Mass, Puccini’s and Rossini’s Messa di Gloria, Haydn’s The Seasons, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and Bizet’s Carmen.
In 2012, to celebrate our 40th anniversary he conducted the fantastically received Mendelssohn’s Elijah, followed closely by the anniversary concert Last Night of the Proms. Martin’s tenure with Warriner has seen it more than double in membership.
Martin conducts a number of other local choirs.
He founded the respected Akeman Voices chamber choir in 1999 to fulfil his desire to present high quality, intimate, performances of renaissance and baroque music, of a mainly a-capella style. This skilled ensemble of semi-professional singers performs across the county. From November 2010 until July 2012 Martin was engaged as Joint Musical Director with Banbury Choral Society. He is currently also Musical Director with Bicester Choral and Operatic Society (BCOS), having previously held the role of MD 1999 to 2002, conducting a wide range of genres from Purcell and Britten to G&S and Broadway musicals. He was delighted to pick up the baton once again, having been appointed their new Musical Director permanently from May 2012, after stepping in to conduct Guys & Dolls the previous year. He has acted as Chorus Master at Stowe Opera since 2002: Rusalka, Don Carlos, Hansel & Gretel, The Marriage of Figaro, and last year’s Carmen at its' new home of Winslow Hall. Since 2010 Martin has been Musical Director for the Deddington Festival "Come and Sing" workshop and performance day. In 2010 he presented Carl Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana, and in 2011 singers from around Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties came together to rehearse and perform Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, followed by a greatly enjoyed concert performance of The Mikado in 2012. In 2013 they presented Vivaldi’s Gloria.
As a singer Martin has worked with many of Britain’s leading opera companies. Roles include: Ruiz Il Trovatore and Morales Carmen (Stowe Opera), Ernesto Don Pasquale (Pavilion Opera, Manila, Philippines), Dr Blind Die Fledermaus and Goro Madam Butterfly (Opera Box). Concert engagements have included: Mozart Requiem (Christchurch Cathedral, Oxford) and Coronation Mass with Emma Kirkby, Messiah, West Side Story Suites "Action" (Oxford Philomusica), Bach B-minor Mass (Leicester Bach Choir), Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (Stamford Chamber Orchestra), and Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle / Bach St. John Passion / Handel Israel in Egypt (St. James Singers, Warwick).
